It’s funny ‘cuz it’s not like I offer much analysis on these Deep Cuts episodes. It’s just me frothing at the mouth at how much I love the songs—which, honestly, I wasn’t sure anyone would want to listen to.
In my writing, I stay away from personal takes like that and do my best to be neutral. But it’s fun to let my hair down after 20 years of being rigid about sticking to my rule. I always try to write from a perspective that’ll strike a chord with people on any side of the fence—I want my writing to ring true for people who like different songs/albums and have different preferences than I do.
But this is more like me talking songs over a beer with a friend. I still would never argue like “this song is BETTER” but just “this is what connects with ME.”
Dude, I post a lot of Rush stuff. LOL. Favorite all time band, and Xandadu is my favorite song of theirs. Also have been to four Rush tribute band shows in the last 60 days right here in Rochester! You gotta come to the next ones!
I heard about a show just before Xmas at Three Heads where a local band did the whole Moving Pictures album, but I didn’t go b/c 1) it was 20 bucks 2) I heard the bandleader is really into Dream Theater. That’s too literal for me. In fact, this was how the back-and-forth between me and my friend went while we were watching the Bills at his house:
neighbor: December 18th, (forgot the bandname) is playing Three Heads doing all of Moving Pictures.
me: Oh, that sounds like fun. How much is it.
him: 20 bucks.
me: Yeah, I'm not paying 20 bucks for that.
him: They're really big into Dream Theater so you know they're excellent musicians who can handle Moving Pictures.
me: If they're into Dream Theater that I'm definitely not going.
him: Reach out to the band and tell them you want to write about the show so they let you in free.
me: Nah. Even for free I can't see that being worth it. Anybody who thinks that playing like Dream Theater equips them to play Rush is missing the whole point. You can bet they're going to emphasize all the wrong qualities in the music. It's too literal.
Four in the last 60 days?!?! And that’s awesome that we have the same favorite song! (You must’ve listened up to that part where I gave my #1.) I gotta interact with one of your FB posts so you come up on my feed more. I’ll go take a look right now. I think I’ll prob’ly start a music-nerd pileup by going off on some tangent on there, ha.
I also love how much I was reminded of what a kick-ass classic rock band they were in their early days (which you already heard me say on the episode).
I >still< have to post that one, along with a mountain of other interviews. It’s all in the pipeline, but I’m getting into a rhythm of posting consistently. Thank you for the interest!
Fucking awesome, dude! #RushRules! I am sure you see my addiction to them on Facebook.

So great of you to say so, but no — I DID NOT know that you were such a big fan!

And the lead singer is easy on the eyes.
They were excellent. At least the Rush tunes were. And they played more than just MP.

I like that you ended on Lakeside Park, too. Great fucking tune.
LOVE that tune.

Can’t wait to listen!! Where can I find the Steve Gorman interview you mentioned? I couldn’t dig it up in a Google search.
I >still< have to post that one, along with a mountain of other interviews. It’s all in the pipeline, but I’m getting into a rhythm of posting consistently. Thank you for the interest!
Haha. I have seen that movie regarding interviews in wait! Always love the posts here!
Cool man, thanks. I appreciate the nudge on that one. SO much great stuff to share. No time like the present… Happy New Year!
