Np man, feel your pain. If you really factor the way they operate it can take some of the sting away I hope. The saddest part, I mean I have been die hard Raiders since 84, first year I really remember watching, and it’s been a hard journey. If you think the calls are bad - Raiders get the hose most regular season games. I mean you don’t go 20 years in a row as the most penalized team randomly. Al Davis suing the nfl has pushed our heel status. But yeah I now watch with much less heart, it literally tears your soul out. Put me in a bad headspace to be a dad or colleague at times.
It's always struck me how people around the sport talk about the Tuck Rule -- it's like they acknowledge it and downplay it at the same time, never truly diving-in to how unusual that was. What a weird, self-gaslighting thing to do.
I also have to figure that the players and coaches eventually catch-on to how the deck is either stacked against them or for them. That's got to be frustrating. Which is why I think so many of them rationalize bad calls by repeating all these cliches.
It's an even weirder, more difficult position for them to be in than the fans. Because they're actually doing the work in a system that will likely not reward them fairly for it. Sure they're getting paid, but when you have more money than you know what to do with and you're a competitor who cares about your level of achievement, that's got to suck.
Wow I didn’t know the NFL is entertainment oriented and therefore not purely competitive. I should have seen that based on the Taylor Swift presence. It makes me feel like I am part of a weird non discerning mob. But it’s hard to turn it off for the Bills. I only decided later in life to get excited about them because I remember my mother watching them alone by herself when she was still living and she loved them. It makes me remember her and I am grateful for a husband who knows the game and loves it too.
I was very happy to see the commercial with people sick of Patrick in ads lol
NFL doesn’t openly advertise its legal classification as an entertainment entity, which allows it to operate differently from traditional sports leagues. This distinction gives the NFL the ability to influence outcomes or emphasise entertainment value without the strict regulatory oversight of fair competition. By downplaying this fact, the NFL maintains the illusion of being a purely competitive sports league, which most fans assume it to be. I’m watching your video it seems you and a lot of fans don’t know this. NFL presents events, not games. MLB for example is a sports league and legally has to promote fairness tithe nfl does not and can legally steer outcomes. To think they can legally do this and don’t would be absurd. They must operate under the veil of fairness or you wouldn’t have the same spirit in the parking lot in Orchard Park. Or better for them, the same dollars spent. In 2021 the nfl partnerships with major sports books only amplifies this narrative. Hope this helps you, iit has helped me stop caring about the nfl and take it as purely entertainment with manipulative outcomes. No we’re not crazy, it’s not a conspiracy, it is really happening lol.
Did you know there are a lot of sites that let you bet on the WWE but for some reason not in the USA, I wonder why? Like here in Canada we can bet WWE events on Bet 365 and a few others, knowing full well they are scripted events....you can bet on what movie is going to win the oscar....crazy. Seems ppl just want the nfl to be real so that's what the nfl gives them.
I don't know why the general public needs this when they are the only "sports league" that isn't considered a sport legally, but an entertainment event. Judges have ruled on this already (Mayer v. Belichick (2010), a U.S. appeals court ruled that NFL ticket buyers have no legal right to an “honest” contest.)
I would add the avg masses fan doesn't know this is legally the case. Like they think it's absurd if you say this to them. Get this - if you say anything along these lines on the many videos on YT of ppl debating this topic, YT will shadow ban your comment.
Like you can say - the refs missed this call, wow, you can say nah, bad calls go both ways etc, you can say anything dumb, but once you articulate to any degree - nobody sees it. Like they don't want the cat out of the bag. It blows my mind, that ppl debate if the refs are purposely do X and debating it, but you won't hardly hear anyone say they legally can so why would they not...you won't see those comments of any depth on YT.
I would also add that legalized gambling adds a wrinkle to all of this because the gambling bets are placed on the premise that the competition is legitimate. At least that's the argument I think that could be waged in court. I suspect that illegal gambling has always had an influence on the game, but that there has also always been a parallel current of tampering coming from within the league itself. I imagine that those two sets of influences are not in alignment, or not necessarily. The legal sports books don't care if the sport is tampered as long as it doesn't impact the number of customers they get placing bets. I think where this could go awry for the NFL, though, is if the legal sports books Make the case that the bad publicity is discouraging people from betting. And if >that< happens then that opens the door for a class-action lawsuit from gamblers, who would be making a different legal argument than fans who bought tickets. At least that's what I suspect..
Issue is, there's no real reason for Sports books to take issue with it. Ppl are betting in record numbers, you can bet using the toilet now. Betting adverts are literally everywhere. If someone is addicted to drugs, at least they are not bombarded by it all day long, and can't "use" from anywhere anytime.
Courts rule that because we don't know the outcome it's a legal bet. The "event's" are not scripted to the degree the WWE is as well, so the outcomes are not predetermined, just guided that way. The issue, most nfl teams have a lot of parody, and one or two ill time calls can really push a team over the top.
I think the one thing that would get the sports books to turn on the NFL would be if the public perception/PR got so bad that people started betting less frequently -- enough to make a dent in the sports books' bottom line.
Then again, it's only a matter of time before we see bets on the over/under for bad calls! 😂
Thank you for adding this. I've actually been aware of this for a long time. There was that lawsuit filed (by fans of the New York Jets?) that lost in court. I didn't mention that in the video but yeah, it's something I've known about and I'm glad you brought it up!
Like it's a given the games are manipulated then, if you have known this for a long time you can def look back and see a ticky tack pass interference or hold called pro or con for a certain narrative. Those and bad spots or rulings of a catch are the places they can make their most impact.
You should have really focused on it as one of your main points in your video and talked to it at length. Because most ppl will call you crazy if you bring it to them...it goes against every childhood memory for some...so it can't be true. Santa Clause isn't real for adults syndrome I find.

I also think that even one whistleblower coming forward could irreversibly damage the NFL's brand.

I did NOT know that. Fascinating!

The level of rationalization is just staggering -- and telling.
