I call myself an “apostate music journalist,” but the more accurate description is that my mission, intentions, and approach have always been out of step with my peers.

My most recent published work is compiled here.

You can browse my archives by outlet at: Bandcamp | Billboard | Brave Words | City | Consequence | Democrat & Chronicle | Diffuser | Holler | Nashville Scene | Noisey | Paste | Pitchfork | PopMatters | Revolver | SPIN | Ultimate Classic Rock.

I write here about music, culture, sports, parenting, anxiety, and the madness of crowds. I also post fiction.

In general, I feel that my job is to guide you to your own impressions of whatever music / art / topic I’m discussing. I consider myself a curator, not an arbiter. On my best days — if I’ve done my job correctly — you should be able to walk >around< my personal opinions and make use of my >observations< to form an impression of what >you< would feel about that work of art or topic.

That said, I hold firm to the following:

Free speech, informed consent, and due process are NON-NEGOTIABLE.

Scientific dissent does NOT equal extremism.

Censorious impulses, trial by public condemnation, and hyper-polarization MUST be counter-acted.
