Massively consequential rulings on abortion and guns just made news on the same day. They call for commentary - but not from me!
Before I get back to the usual topics...
I always feel obnoxious for being like “here’s my latest write-up!” or “here’s an unrelated thought from my soapbox” on days where there’s huge breaking news. But I don’t like commenting on huge news in the moment, if at all.
I will say this for now: I'm just not seeing how the USA as we know it holds together much longer, as the political and cultural divide between states widens past the point of no return. I can't see these new Supreme Court rulings helping. In fact, they appear to throw gasoline on an already-raging fire. But even that premise is best served if I bring guests on to discuss it.
It’s incredibly difficult to separate signal from noise at times of heightened emotion. And with difficult issues, I always find nuanced discussions between contrasting viewpoints the most helpful. In case that’s what you’re up for, here are a handful that have really impressed me as the day has unfolded.
Three of these clips are from the same source and feature the same two people, but I really appreciate the measured tone there. As one of the analysts, Emily Jashinsky, says at the start of the first clip, "I don't think there's anywhere else in news with two people who disagree more on this topic sharing a screen."
